Neighbors Immigration Clinic is site of National Justice for Our Neighbors, a United Methodist Immigration Ministry. National Justice for Our Neighbors is a network of 18 sites across the country, each providing free or low-cost immigration legal services for low-income immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. The JFON network grew out of the United Methodist Committee on Relief’s long commitment to refugees and immigrants. Since UMCOR’s founding in 1940, refugee ministry has been at the heart of its work, guided by Christian values of hospitality to the stranger.
Since 1949, UMCOR has participated in refugee resettlement in partnership with Church World Service and the relief, development, and refugee assistance ministries of Christian denominations in the United States. Church World Service’s ecumenical refugee program works with the U.S. government and local churches to coordinate the reception and placement of refugees.
For many years, UMCOR focused primarily on providing funding to those CWS projects which offer refugee and immigration services. However, after the passage of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), UMCOR also began strengthening its connections with local United Methodist congregations on immigration issues, sending information and alerts, conducting workshops, and speaking out about immigration at church events—all for the express purpose of better enabling congregations to understand and respond to the needs and concerns of our immigrant neighbors.
UMCOR also provided funding for immigration projects within United Methodist Districts and for congregations assisting individual immigrants. One of the projects funded by UMCOR was Just Neighbors. Several pastors and attorneys of the United Methodist Church founded Just Neighbors in 1996 to develop a practical response to the legal challenges that low-income immigrants face in the United States. The organization set out to provide accurate and reliable information and services to the immigrant community. Located in Annandale, Virginia, Just Neighbors today offers volunteer-centered legal clinics, with attorneys providing counsel to clients, as well as outreach to foster mutual understanding between immigrants and the larger community in which they live.
Based on the Just Neighbors model and with their support, UMCOR established Justice for Our Neighbors in 1999. Since that time, Justice for Our Neighbors has grown to a network of 18 sites that support over 50 clinics to serve thousands of clients annually.
Neighbors Immigration Clinic es el sitio de National Justice for Our Neighbors (Justicia Para Nuestros Vecinos Nacional, conocido por su sigla en inglés: JFON), un ministerio de inmigración de la iglesia metodista unida. JFON es una red de 18 sitios por todo el país, que proveen servicios legales gratis o baratos a los inmigrantes, refugiados, o solicitantes de asilo de bajos ingresos. La red de JFON surgió del compromiso dedicado a los inmigrantes y refugiados del United Methodist Committee on Relief (Comité de Auxilio Metodista Unida, por su sigla en inglés: UMCOR). Desde la fundación del UMCOR en 1940, el corazón de su trabajo ha sido ministrar a los refugiados, un resultado de sus valores cristianos de cuidar a los forasteros.
Desde 1949, el UMCOR ha participado en el reasentamiento de refugiados, con la asociación de Church World Service (Servicio de la Iglesia Mundial, por su acrónimo en inglés: CWS) y de los ministerios de auxilio, desarrollo, y asistencia de refugiados de otras denominaciones cristianas estadounidenses. El programa de refugiados de CWS trabaja con el gobierno estadounidense y las iglesias locales para coordinar la colocación de refugiados.
Desde muchos años, el UMCOR se enfoca principalmente en suministrar fondos a los proyectos de CWS que ofrecen servicios a los refugiados e inmigrantes.
